Eric and Cynthia
Eric and Cynthia crossed paths after attending the same high school, Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, where they were three years apart and didn't know each other. They have been married since 1978.
Cynthia grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts, where as a child she loved hanging upside down by her knees from the hemlocks in the backyard, and lived for the two days a year the city's itinerant gym teacher came and they did tumbling in the basement at school. She played every season of interscholastic sports in high school, and every season on the basketball team in college. As an adult she took up cartwheels, ballet lessons, playing infield, co-ed basketball, figure skating lessons, ice-dancing lessons (with Eric), and yoga.
Her education includes a BA in English literature, an MS in physical education, six design studios in architecture school (including one in cohousing design), and a 500-hour teacher training program in yoga (completed 2012).
She has done salaried work as a camp counselor, physical education teacher, coach, and deli worker. She has done mostly non-salaried work: designing and contracting the house in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, where she and Eric raised a family; stay-at-home-mom to their two daughters; Girl Scout leader and trainer; caretaker of aging parents; youth sports coach and league administrator; women's softball manager; adult recreation supervisor; and Senior Center volunteer (teaching yoga and exercise).
Cynthia loves cooking, reading (of late, mostly spiritual journey writers), sky watching, learning and reciting poems by heart, playing shortstop, practicing hook shots, singing (tenor) in her church choir, hanging laundry outside on the clothesline, tending the garden, her dog Jolly, practicing and teaching yoga, and being a grandmother.
Eric was born and raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts, spending every summer in Cushing, Maine, since the age of six. Although he was in Cushing only part of the year, the land and people he knew there took his attention. His education includes an AB in English literature, an MA in teaching, an MS in ocean engineering, and a three-year shamanic study program. Eric's work experience varied, including teaching English (one year), commercial diving (ten years), and engineering consulting (26 years). He is now doing carpentry and odd jobs part-time. During his time as an engineer he worked in 30 countries and came to appreciate the diversity and commonalties of cultures around the world. A lot of his focus now is on his spiritual path. After retiring several years ago, he spent a lot of time alone, living on a small island in Cushing in the warm months and in a shop on the mainland in the winter, both places heated with wood, with no running water.
The cohousing community has given Eric hope of restoring a close connection to the land of this area.
